Probably the most useful of the bunch. This document crams all the essential information for AD&D spells in just a few pages. Contains detail on range, duration, casting time, spell components, etc. So far, I have:

Cleric spells - up to 4th level

Druid spells - up to 4th level

Magic-User spells - up to 4th level

Illusionist spells up to 2nd level

I always have trouble working out which spells magic-user characters can and cannot learn. It's a horrendous bookkeeping mess. However, I like the idea that not every magic-user will know sleep, charm person, etc. but will have some of the wonkier spells, like fool's gold and write.

To make the bookkeeping a bit easier, I went up and wrote up a sheet listing every magic-user spell in the player's handbook with a little box next to each spell. The idea is that if the box is checked, the spell is in the character's spell book. Cross off any unknowable spells.

I wrote this up to give new players an overview of each of the AD&D classes. High level abilities aren't always included. In Segeo UI font, it fits cleanly on one page and is easily readable.

Note that the bard has been rewritten as a first level class. My games rarely make it that high, so I figured I would throw those players a bone and let them go for it right off the bat.
Bards, [ask for handout] (12 intelligence, 12 dexterity, 15 charisma) – Bards are
wandering musicians and storytellers, combining combat, thievery, and magic.
Bards can inspire allies and charm NPCs with their music, know a large number
of languages, and have a knack for legends and lore, which may even allow them
to identify certain magic items.

Cleric, pg 20 (9 wisdom; non-True Neutral alignment) - Clerics bear a certain resemblance to
religious orders of knighthood of medieval times. They are skilled combatants
but are forbidden by their religious codes from using edged and/or pointed
weapons that shed blood. For their dedication, clerics are granted a
number of protective/curative spells and the ability to turn away undead.

Druid, pg 20 (12 wisdom, 15 charisma; True Neutral alignment) – Druids
are a sub-class of cleric that can be visualized as medieval cousins of what
the ancient Celtic sect would have become had it survived the Roman conquest.
While similar to the cleric’s, druid spells are more offensive in nature and
attuned to the outdoors, but their spell casting ability power is spoiled by
metal armor. They are limited to the club, dagger, dart, hammer, scimitar,
sling, spear, and staff.

a 1 in 6 chance to be surprised themselves. Finally, rangers may track foes in
outdoor and underground dungeon settings.
clubs, daggers, darts, slings, and swords. In combat, thieves are most effective

the victim. Furthermore assassins may use any weapon and are skilled in
disguise, spying, and gain the use (at 3rd level) of all the thief’s special

increased unarmored AC, movement speed, armed/unarmed damage, and a decreased
change of being surprised. Starting at 3rd level, monks also gain the use of
the thief’s special skills and an odd conglomeration of seemingly unrelated
special abilities of their own.

I've got a new game starting Monday. Mostly new players I've never gamed with but have know for a few years. I can't decide whether to use NGR or AD&D (light), but for now, I'm going to post some AD&D house rules and other resoureces I've written up over the years to make the game a little smother and less wonky.

AD&D House Rules

Character Generation

To generate stats, roll 4d6 six times, dropping the lowest die from each set. Arrange to taste. Or you can just assume you rolled 16, 15, 14, 13, 11, 6, add 1 point to any score.

No demi-humans, at least not without some persuading. Twelve classes and a plethora of spells and weapons should be more than enough to play around with. That and their extra abilities can b.e a bit overwhelming at first.

Roll hit points for first level. If the initial roll of the die (or dice for rangers and monks) is lower than the number given below, then the character is granted this number of hit points to begin his adventuring career:

Cleric 4 Magic-User 2

Alignment is mostly of secondary concern. Just choose one that sounds OK to you, but don’t worry too much about it, unless you’re a paladin. Then you don’t get it so easy. Also, no masonic-like alignment languages. Note, however, that many magic items may only be used by characters of certain alignments.

Rangers are professional giant hunters, not Aragorn-protecting-civilization-from-the-wilderness types. As such they have no alignment restrictions or code of conduct and the bonus to damage vs. giant class foes may also be applied to missiles, but have only 1 HD at 1st level.

Magic-Users and Illusionists gain bonus spells as clerics, but with intelligence rather than wisdom as the governing stat. In exchange, all spell casters (including clerics and druids) may not prepare multiple copies of the same spell in a single payload.

A beginning Magic-User or Illusionist character will know four spells. One of these will automatically be read magic. The second is chosen by the player from the list in the player’s handbook. The final two will be randomly determined from the same list.

Coinage and Equipment

100 copper pieces = 10 silver pieces = 1 gold coin. It’s just easier to keep track of that way. Electrum coins are also common in ancient cashes found in ruins or other regions of the wild. Being a mix of silver and gold, two electrum pieces are equal to one gold coin.

Not all weapons and armor are created equal. Some are just better than others (longswords, flails, plate armor). These are assumed to be newer technologies, and, like all new technologies, will be surpassed in time. Ancient as they are, magic weapons and armor will be of earlier fashion – broad swords and rather than two-handed swords, battle axes instead of flails, glaives and spear instead of halberds, scale and leather instead of plate, and so on.

Combat

Armor versus weapon adjustments will be used only in when fighting human-type foes only, where armor can be accurately described by type. The to-hit adjustment will be based on the type of armor the opponent is wearing, not the opponent’s actual AC. So a character wearing leather +1 armor and wielding a shield, is considered to have AC 7 for the purposes of the armor versus weapon adjustment table, not AC 6.

Experience and Leveling

No training and related costs are requires to gain new levels.

Experience will be awarded for acquiring treasure, slaying monsters, and exploration. Treasure is worth 1 XP for every GP value, including magic items. Monsters and treasure have a set XP value based on their hit dice or rarity, respectively. Experience will also be awarded to characters who participate in finding new places/causing major events, arbitrarily based on how difficult it would be for a group at 1st-level.

Treasure spent with accordance to the character’s roll will also award additional XP. Clerics, Paladins, and Monks donating money to their church/order or giving money to the poor; Fighters, Rangers, and Thieves spending money building up their reputation or carousing at the local tavern; Magic-User and Illusionists researching new spells or improving their library; Druids performing sacrifices to the Old Gods; Assassin spending gold on training or reconnaissance; etc. would all quality.

Magic

Potions and scrolls are the most common magic items available, and may even be purchased in specific cases from major temples and greedy magicians – although their stock and selection will generally be extremely limited, and it’s not a sure bet they’ll have anything at all useful.

Magic armors, weapons, and artifacts are rare. Such items exist in stories and legends, but they are not common and quite ancient, made in times long passed (so no magical plate mail or long swords). If you find such items, there is no guarantee a magic-user with the “Identify” spell will be available to tell you about it. Such items are best learned through investigation, questioning sages, seeking lost knowledge, and some trial and error.

When going out to play AD&D with a group of new players, there are two steps in character creation that take considerably longer than others. Those are, of course, looking ability score adjustments and explaining what they mean and choosing equipment. Here's a solution I'm looking at for the second problem.

All character receive a Backpack, Waterskin, Week’s Iron Rations, Traveler’s Clothes, Purse with 1d6 Gold Coins*, equipment suitable to the character’s class, and any one equipment pack, excluding monks, who receive only these items.

*Copper coins for monks.

Equipment by Class

Note that javelins and throwing axes come in sets of 3, darts in sets of 6. Bows and crossbows come with either 24 quarrels (crossbows) or 20 arrows (bows).

Cleric: Wooden holy symbol. Roll d6 for armor: 1-2, Padded Armor (AC 8); 3-4, Ring Mail (AC 7); 5-6, Chain Mail (AC 5). Choice of club flail, hammer, mace, or staff.

Druid: Sprig of Mistletoe. Leather armor. Choice of club, dagger, darts (6), hammer, scimitar, sling, spear, or staff.

Fighter, Paladin, Ranger: Roll d6 for armor: 1-2, Studded Leather Armor (AC 7); 3-4, Scale Mail (AC6); 5-6, Chain Mail (AC 5); choice of any two weapons or a weapon and shield.

Magic-User or Illusionist: Spell book (containing 4 spells); choice of dagger, darts (6), or staff; bag of spell components (four castings per spell)

Thief: Thieves’ picks & tools; leather armor; choice of club, dagger, darts (6), sling, or sword (long, broad, short).

Assassin: Thieves’ picks & tools; leather armor; choice of any weapon

Monk: Choice of bo stick, club, crossbow, dagger, hand axe, javelin, jo stick, pole arm, spear, or staff.

Equipment Packs

Dungeoneering Pack A: Small mallet, 12 iron spikes, 10’ Pole

Dungeoneering Pack B: 50’ rope, 6 torches, tinderbox, large sack

Explorer’s Pack: Tent, 6 torches, tinderbox, 50’ rope

Hunter’s Pack: Belt pouch, hunting dog or falcon, pint of good wine

Investigator’s Pack: 3 glass vials, small silver mirror, small sack

Lantern Kit: Hooded lantern, 6 flasks of oil, tinderbox

Mapper’s Pack: 12 sheets of parchment, quill, 3 oz. brown ink, leather map case

Minstrel’s Pack: Lute or flute or horn, fancy clothes, letter of recommendation

Rogue’s Pack: Large sack, 2 light weapons (daggers, darts, hand axes, etc.), sprig of belladonna

Vampire Hunter’s Pack: Silver dagger OR 6 silver arrows OR 3 vials of holy water, garlic bud, wolvesbane sprig

Warrior’s Pack: Additional weapon, helmet, shield
Opinions range that the spell grants the use complete mind control of the subject to merely placing the charmed person in a position similar to that of a friendly henchman or retainer. What all these arguments seems to miss is a few passages hidden in Monsters & Treasure that give great insight into Charm Person's intent.

First, though, let's look at the spell itself:

Charm Person: This spell applies to all two-legged, generally mammalian figures near to or less than man-size, excluding all monsters in the "Undead" class but including Sprites, Pixies, Nixies, Kobolds, Goblins, Orcs, Hobgoblins, and Gnolls. If the spell is successful it will cause the charmed entity to come completely under the influence of the Magic-User until such time as the "charm" is dispelled (Dispel Magic). Range 12". (M&M, 23)

The key word, here, I see is "completely." Completely under the influence, the spell reads. While what exactly that influence entails is unexplained here, it is not partial in any way.

Let us now move on to the potion of human control in Monsters & Treasure:

Human Control: This potion has generally the same effect as a Charm Person spell, but it can effect from 1-12 persons with 3 or fewer Hit Dice, 2-8 with 4-6 Hit Dice, 1-4 with 7-9 Hit Dice, and 1 with 10 or more Hit Dice. Saving Throws are applicable. (M&T, 32)

As you can see, the potion of human control mimics the affect of a Charm Person spell, but allows control of a greater number of persons. In a similar manner, the potion of giant control makes reference to the Charm Monster spell, and the potion of undead control to the Charm Animal spell.

The final bit of clarification comes from the ring of Mammal Control, which reads:

Mammal Control: The ring allows the wearer to control from 3-18 small mammals or from 1-8 large mammals. This does not consider any creatures listed on the Monster Reference Table. Control is complete, even to having the controlled mammals attack the others with it which are not controlled. Range is 6". (M&T, 33)

The question is, really, does the Charm Person spell work like the ring of mammal control, even to the extent of forcing the charmed person to attack its allies? Seeing as Human Control is (basically) the same affect as Charm Person, and Human Control should mimic the general guidelines of Mammal Control, I would say yes, based on my reading of the following passages.

But since others seem to have different opinions on the subject, what am I missing?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05494391031541363595noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219169252198225629.post-11988532920223085142012-07-18T20:09:00.001-07:002012-07-18T20:15:26.806-07:00My Little Brown Books

Having been accepted to the Peace Corps and shipping out in April, I realized that it might be good to have a set of these little, easily transportable books. Problem was, they're a bit on the pricey side to take to rural Bulgaria only to be ripped, soiled, and smudged, so I decide to print my own.

All that's left to do is figure out which two books I want to print with these extra sheets of cardstock. Right now, I'm leaning towards Eldritch Wizardry and Greyhawk, but might switch out Carcosa with G.H.'s thieves and paladins.

And, yes. My apartment really does have orange counter tops.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05494391031541363595noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219169252198225629.post-59951974652002902592012-07-18T10:05:00.004-07:002012-07-22T09:52:51.783-07:00Pendragon G+

Last night, I finally got a chance to play Pendragon over G+ again. And while I could feel myself grasping for rules at times (it's been a while since I've played), I had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The quest included a search for the Last Roman Census (which turned out to be from Caligula's Seashell Campaign) as a wedding gift for Robert, Earl of Salisbury's, daughter, Vivian. Other events included a joust with a lovesick night, making siege upon what was thought to be a minuscule fairy castle, and a rumble with a couple of King Mark's men, whose plot somehow concerns the Earl's lovely daughter.

What I enjoyed most was just how different all of the knights were. Sir Claudius, a Roman knight, sought to earn back the honor and reputation of his people; Sir Guy was a cowardly lady's man; Sir Malphile (sp?), the proud, reckless, and brutal; and Lady Saline, calm, courteous, a brilliant swordswomen, and how with a retinue of 12 men under her command for the next six months. Much of the two and a half hour game consisted of the knights bickering amongst themselves, giving me a chance to plot the next phase of the adventure.

One thing about Pendragon I've always had difficulties with is coming up with the initial adventure, which nearly always comes off as a little forced. While I tried for hours, scribbling notes over six pieces of white paper, to come up with something worthy of Malory, nothing really stuck. Instead, I wrote up a little mad-lib and had the players fill it in at the beginning of the night. While I didn't get a chance to use all that they came up with, it was just the inspiration I needed to sprinkle seeds for further adventure.

Playing so much D&D lately, there's a couple things about Pendragon I seemed to have forgotten, like just how competent beginning characters are with their swords, which made things a bit easier for them than I had initially expected. But that's easily correctable. The other is how difficult it is to run a good wilderness campaign and make things seems less than completely arbitrary. But now that I have some idea where the game is headed, I should be able to make amends rather quickly; that, and I need to refresh my knowledge of the rules a bit more.

We didn't get to the Winter Phase last night, you know that time where the Knights sit around in the castle, manning the Lord's walls, wooing the ladies of court while snowfalls make travel difficult and dangerous. It's actually my favorite aspect of Pendragon, and am excited to introduce it to the players. Since the Winter Phase needs an entire post in and of itself, I'll leave you a song now sung by the Earl's minstrels concerning the events that transpired in the village of Windsor, written by Zzarchov, player of Sir Claudius.

The lady, the thinker and the noble Roman
wielder is fresh and relatively free of damage (less than 10%) from 1-6 points
are added to his total (7-42 then possible). If damage from over 50% has been
sustained, or the character is under mental strain from some form of magic,
from 1-6 points are deducted (5-30 then possible).

So I decided to get some new colored pencils to see if they'd show up better than the ones I used in my previous scan. Turns out, they do. This map was once again done with the article, "The Wilderness Architect" (Parts 1&2, Parts 3&4).

By the look of the map and the placement of the villages surrounding it, this estate in located somewhere on the boarderlands, with civilization to the north east and north west. A great body of water lying to the east. The "True Wilderness" area lies to the south and west. Alternatively, I would always flip the map around, but you get the general idea.

What I'm not quite satisfied with still, and why I haven't finished stocking the villages and castle, is the method in Underworld and Wilderness Adventures for actually populating civilized regions. First, I'm imagining civilization as a relatively mundane world, so chimera and basilisk guards are a bit much, and better saved for the wilderness. It also generates NPCs a little too high level for my liking, especially for more civilized regions. So basically, I need to write some new tables that will create a world more in-tune to the concept I'm imagining.

Overall, though, I'm quite pleased with how this map turned out and the terrain generation methods of "The Wilderness Architect." Next time, I'll fill in the rest of the area and share the new tables (once I get them written). Stay tuned for moreAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05494391031541363595noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219169252198225629.post-68088798243203216652012-06-06T16:37:00.001-07:002012-06-07T10:40:06.545-07:00"The Wilderness Architect," Test Map"The Wilderness Architect," Parts 1 and 2
Contained in issues of two and three of Fight On! magazine "The Wilderness Architect" is something I've never really looked at before. That is until yesterday. Written by Victor Raymond and inspired by a series of articles of the same name published in White Dwarf #25-27, these two articles give instructions for randomly generating a robust and compelling wilderness map for use in the original Dungeons and Dragons game.

Parts 3 and 4 of "The Wilderness Architect" described detailing the wilderness and civilized regions around the city and stronghold. These two are much denser than parts 1 and 2, and I will spending a little more time describing them and hopefully picking up on some of their interest.

Part 3: When creating a stronghold, the starting point is always the monetary investment, as such this is where Raymond begins part 3: with taxation. Based on an average annual venue of 10 gold coins per inhabitant from the town/stronghold and the surrounding villages, "The Wilderness Architect" instructs the referee to design the sites fortification as described in Underworld and Wilderness Adventures. Figuring out the costs of the walls, castle, etc. with 1 to 3 year's worth of taxation depending on the age and prosperity of the region.

After that, it's time to determine the presence of any other strongholds in each direction, typically between 1-5 and anywhere from 10 to 120 miles away. Raymond also discusses the placement of elven, dwarven, and halfling strongholds, but doesn't go into concerning their exact placement (as it would depend on the referee's particular map).

Part 3 continues with a table of encounters in civilized areas, where dangers are less, but opportunities to rob wealthy merchants and random nobles are never far off. While humans reside in towns and castles, various barbaric humanoids (including bandits, berserkers, and the like) may dwell in caves or even have strongholds, towns, and villages of their own out in the 'true' wilderness areas. While only a dozen or so monster are listed, it should be easy incorporate further monsters with the basis of detailes already laid out.

Then we come to actually placing things of interest and monsters in the wilderness. The gist of this section is to take every 20 by 20 mile area and roll for it like it's a dungeon room. Monsters would indicate some sort of lair, treasure indicating ruins (in which the treasure is stored and guarded), etc.

Finally, part 3 gives some information on a more top down, intelligence design sort of view on wilderness creation. I'm not terribly interested in that now, so I'll allow you to peruse it in your own time (because there's some good stuff in it, too.)

Part 4: The final section of "The Wilderness Architect" is all about making your wilderness come to life. The key here that Raymond expresses is not to let anything be ordinary. You haven't just entered into another plain, old forest, but one where roots are knotted and winds howl menacingly, swooping enough the brambles. Give specific places names, but not too many places. You don't need to name every mountain, but name a few. Don't have too many gorges, one is enough. Very terrain details and keep them unique (if possible).

Another way is to think about whose come before. Was there an ancient civilization once residing in these parts, or it is part of a loose confederacy of brigands? Have there been settlers sent this way? Adventurers? What information have they brought back - surely something must be know of what lies in each direction.

Raymond also suggests the use of weather and metaphor to create certain feelings. Types of weather for different seasons should be written up in generalities, while simple expressions of theme should be detailed as well.

"The Wilderness Architect" ends with the notion that, like in a dungeon, the players won't find everything: that's normal. That and it doesn't help to have everything happening at once, a few ongoing is enough - don't overdo it (certainly one of my personal difficulties).

--

And so ends my summary and thoughts on "The Wilderness Architect." I highly recommend checking it out, even if briefly. It's a wonderful piece of work that deserves recognition, but is hardly mentioned in discussion.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05494391031541363595noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219169252198225629.post-46793566258987016332012-06-06T15:39:00.002-07:002012-06-06T16:45:32.333-07:00"The Wilderness Architect", Parts 1 and 2
First, an interlude. Wilderness mapping (and mapping in general) is something I've been quite poor at. Overly critical of my work, any hint of a problem in intelligence deign has always been a nag in the back of my head. While not always a major problem, I have given up many of project for this very reason.

Over the last couple of years, since discovering the plethora of Old School blogs and other resources on the net, I have found a decent solution to this problem: random generation. Yet when it comes to mapping, I have been dissatisfied with any methods I have designed previously. Victor's article manages to correct these mistakes, however, and breathe new life into any wilderness region.

--

What's most intriguing about "The Wilderness Architect" is that the terrain generation of individual hexes is based on the hex before it. On the d6 table, five of the six results are related to the last, such as (3) "Terrain stays the same as the previous hex", and (4) "Even chance of adjacent terrain types" (Fight On! #2, page 56) This makes mapping more unified, with groupings of forests and grasslands that resemble designed maps, but are much more organic and inspiring.

My one issue with terrain generation is that large bodies of standing water are much to prevalent when creating a large map and tends to create too many inland seas for my liking. One or two is fine, but in my test run of the "The Wilderness Architect" I find myself 'cheat' and rerolling a fair number of water hexes.

After generating terrain, comes the town or stronghold. Using and combining with the Dungeons and Dragons rules from Men &Magic and Underworld and Wilderness Adventures, Victory creates a series of tables and guidelines for creating areas of civilization within the generated wilderness, including number of inhabitants, surrounding villages, as well as the location of the local (mega) dungeon.

High and mid level characters will control only castes and strongholds as per OD&D, but towns and cities as well. Instead of rolling for just one high level character in cities and towns, Raymond suggests generating a greater number of mid-level characters. If the town or city also contains a castle, roll for the castles inhabitants as well. Finally, civilized areas may also contain a mid to high level thief, depending on the size of the area: 10% in a small town, 25% in a large town, and 50% in a city.

--

Through these tables and excellent advice, the world is given a real sense of character. There are large forests, sweeping grasslands, areas of massive deserts, etc., but with a good amount of rhyme and just enough reason. While I will be modifying these tables slightly for my Elsys campaign setting, they are an excellent basis for any aspiring referee.

Today marks the first character in FLAILSNAILS to take up the sword of a Legionary in Agrivaina. While heavily based on the fighting-man, the Legionary (as well as it's counter-part, the Hoplite ) are a few slightly different special abilities, as described below:

Legionary
You have a d6 HD, save as a fighter, but you require the same XP as a magic-user to level and 1/4 of your treasure is expected to be sent back to the empire. In exchange you:

* May receive any necessary clerical spells short of raise dead for free if returned to Roma
* Have a 12 + 3% chance per level to correctly divine knowledge from entrails of a goat
* Have 2 loyal Roman henchmen willing to get your back. (1d4 HP, armed in roman military gear)
* Can make a shield wall

For your military gear, you start armed with a suit of Lorica segmentata armor (banded mail), tower shield, gladius (short sword), 3 pilum (javelins), and a Corinthian helm.

Hoplite
You have a d6 HD, save as a fighter, but you require the same XP as a magic-user to level and 1/4 of your treasure is expected to be gifted to your 2 loyal henchmen. In exchange you:

* Receive a +1 bonus to reaction rolls for great oratory
* Once per week, you may call on the Arete of Achilles, blessing you and all of the fighter-types in your party, as per the spell
* Have 2 loyal Greek henchmen willing to get your back. (1d4 HP, armed with a spear, shield, and wearing a toga)
* Can make a shield wall

For your military gear, you start armed with a bronze breastplate and helm, round shield, a spear, and a short sword.

Shield Wall

Forming a shield wall allows you and any other Legionaries/hoplites (including your henchmen) to automatically lose initiative in exchange for a +1 to AC so long as you remain in a lined formation.

No one has given me a write up and there are some details I believe Skull Lord Uggs would like to keep under wraps for the moment. Basically, there's what happened, though.

After gathering 5 halfling goat-rider, a roguish knight, and a ballista to their cause, Xawatlem, Sven, Samson Jones, Eggs, Ba Chim set off to slay the infamous Dragonhound, which turned out to be giant, possessed 22HD ferret with a clan of dire wolves. Only the halflings and the knight were slain.

On the way back,
Sven and his new giraffe mount, assaulted the knight's keep and reclaimed it in the name of Skull Lord Uggs.

After a day's rest,
Xawatlem returned to the Dragonhound's cave with
Sven, Ba Chim, and [Duke's elf character]. There uncovered a secret underground lair within and unknowingly set a Roman-hating, undead legion upon the land.

In the aftermath, Lord Uggs and Alexander of Wessex have declared war on each other over who is the more suitable lord and are looking for additional FLAILSNAILS PC to join their causes.

Sven has been dubbed, by the great Skull Lord, 'Arch Doom Duke,' the second in command the of the Skull Lord's new, spiffy castle.

Samson Jones, on the other hand, is assumbling a "crack team" of "unhinged religious zealots" to fight said demonic legion. He is probably looking for allies as well.

Finally, Xawatlem has declared himself 'Wookie Pope' and is seeking legitimacy for his new title. In the mean time, he is using his resurrection spell to raise a order of "Born-Again Knights" as to thwart Samson for getting all the glory.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05494391031541363595noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219169252198225629.post-18329837704767063662012-03-22T11:09:00.001-07:002012-03-22T11:09:12.849-07:00Coat of Arms - Sir Antonio

So, the mighty Samson Jones,
leaving the smoldering remains of the corrupt officials who dared oppose him in
Wessex, returns to fair Agrivaina.

Meeting up with an old associate from a previous
expedition (Abador), who had managed to cure himself of his unfortunate mutagen
based side effects. Samson Jones agreed to a consulting offer to guide Abador
in proper techniques for an expedition to a portal leading to an area known as
the "Vats of Mazarin".

Abador and a rather furry fellow appear to have
journeyed through this location previously and had a fairly detailed
understanding of the location. The path was through a steaming jungle, into a
literally steaming cave that reeked of rotting meat.

The cave lead to a narrow stone bridge over a deep
chasm, giant puslating cocoons hung from the ceiling and a glowing rune barred
passage over the bridge. Samson Jones bravely began slaying the cocooned monsters
as they lay in ambush, until a stray halfling that was following the party
stumbled across the rune and activated some sort of magical trap. The giant
cocoons sprung to life and monstrous spider mutated ogres (editors note: They
were not ogres) began leaping towards the stone bridge. Using secret eastern
fighting techniques Samson Jones was able to deflect most of the oncoming ogres
into the bottomless chasm (editors note: Spasming wildly with a 10 foot pole,
Samson knocked a few into the pit before Abador threw a flask of magic acid and
his furry companion turned the surviving mutants to ash through holy
incantations).

Moving quickly over the crumbling stone bridge
they heard heavy chanting from behind a door, however those who had been here
before spoke of vast riches and a terrifying monster to the north. Samson
bravely chained the door shut until he could return later and headed north.

In an ornate temple to a pagan god, the whispered
and hushed tones of these lesser men accompanying the might Samson Jones told
of a horrid creature living in the well, composed of living water and guarding
a vast wealth of ancient gold coins, living in the shadow of a statue to this
accursed pagan deity.

Samson, a truly clever man, knew the solution.
Bravely he poured an entire bottle of pure alcohol into the well and
intoxicated the creature, then as it stumbled drunkenly after his compatriots,
Samson bravely gained its attention by throwing a lit candle at it (editors
note: No...just no). The beast lunged at Samson, who bravely held his ground,
knowing it was bound within the room. As the creature lashed in impotent rage,
inches from Samson, Samson struck it with a burning candle and ignited the
alcohol infused within it.

Its viscous acid exploded in a ball of flame
around the room and Samson let out a manly and violent roar of success before
retiring and allowing the other adventurers to collect the coins. Any rumours
of girlish screaming or being rendered unconscious are slanderous lies by
jealous nobodies.

Returning to town for a quick pint or fourteen, it
seems the local stray halfling that had been following the group was caught in
an unfortunate accidental fire at an alchemists shop. Being a lovable well
trained scamp, Samson buried him in a local pet cemetery and returned to his
celebratory drinks! Luckily he found a new halfling and decided to convert him
to St. Serpentor as a new mascot!

Everyone seems to love the new mascot, especially
that owner of the curio shop. You know...something is really off about that
curio shop and its owner...

From the Desk of Jamson Sones, who is in no way
the same person as anyone listed in the above article.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05494391031541363595noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219169252198225629.post-60037458764714764612012-03-15T14:35:00.003-07:002012-03-15T14:35:59.966-07:00How much railroading is necessary?

Here's a question. Are pure sandboxes satisfying? Is here is a world, there's some stuff going on enough? Or does there need to be something more? I think so. In the average campaign, there is the expectation that the character are adventures. In fact, the world is usually laid out with the assumption that the characters are adventures. Otherwise, why would the GM bother detailing adventure sites?

The question I'm considering is to what extend is setting up the world with certain expectations of the players railroading.

The GM has only so much time to invest in gaming, and thus has to prioritize what sorts of things to flesh out over others. Choosing to flesh out cities and societies will create a world a different feel and expectations than one in which the GM has decided to flesh out an enormous megadungeon (Vats of Mazarin) or a world that has multiple smaller dungeons spread throughout the country side (Agrivaina). Likewise, concentrating equally on on multiple aspects creates plethora more outcomes.

To some extent, the GM has to make some basic decision as to where the fun is. Yes, the GM can improvise and wing a game, a great satisfying game that has nothing to do with what has been previously fleshed out. But there is typically the expectation that the GM will let the players know where the fun can be found.

[To be clear, I'm not saying this is a problem. Not at all, it's just interesting to me. Many of the players in my home game desire more direction and a more epic feel than most G+ players, so I have to set up worlds and adventures differently.]

When setting up Agrivaina, I made the decision that the world would not push the characters in a particular direction, instead I created a list of adventurers are various type. There are 2 megadungeons. A few micro dungeons. Some wilderness situations. A seas adventure. And some intrigue. None have any particular consequences that will negatively effect the PCs if left untouched. However, I do have a limited number of hooks - a limited number of sites I can let the players know that there is fun there (e.i. the ones I've thought of). They can always create their own schemes, but I still feel I'm railroading them towards ideas I think are cool (as opposed to ideas I think are uncool).

My preferences still have a dramatic influence on the game's direction. I'm railroading the game in the direction of adventures I think are cool. If I don't think it's a detail interesting, I'll probably say something else - even when improvising and running off the cuff.

At the same time, I don't feel like I'm doing it wrong. Quite the opposite. Often times a blank slate is a dull slate. It's always more interesting to have a some ongoings in the world to riff off of.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05494391031541363595noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219169252198225629.post-9411789086510986262012-03-14T09:38:00.000-07:002012-03-14T09:38:39.749-07:00The Fallen Paladin

I tend to have a different take on the paladin than most. Basically, I see the Paladin a temporary state of being. One is called to become a Paladin when the world warrants it, when a paladin is needed. They will all eventually fall (or die prematurely). The only question of your 17 Cha fighter is when is the time right for me to declarer my status as a paladin.

This interpretation comes from the Greyhawk supplement for OD&D. It reads

Charisma scores of 17 or greater by fighters indicate the possibility of paladin status IF THEY ARE LAWFUL from the commencement of play for that character. If such fighters elect to they can then become paladins, always doing lawful deeds, for any chaotic act will immediately revoke the status of paladin, and it can never be regained.

The point to pay attention to here is that a fighter need not declare himself a paladin at 1st level, but may elect to at any time. Only thereafter can committing a chaotic revoke his Paladin status.

***

I feel that the boundaries of the paladin class don't fit will with normal D&D play. Most players prefer to player rogues and scoundrels over knights in shining armor. The issue is that those two play styles tend to be mutually exclusive until one of the players cracks or caves. With unwillingness to commit a chaotic act, the paladin must either spend much of his time lording over other players or else fall from grace (or be incredibly unastute while theft and murder go on behind his back). While fun for a session or two, that type of play tend to get stale quite quickly.

However, it is no secret that having a paladin in the party can be an invaluable asset. With the power to heal via lay on hands, cure disease, and later on dispel evil at will. Those are big deal and alone can be fun in the short term. But are they worth suffocating another player's enjoyment over. No, not really.

Thus my interpretation of the temporary paladin came into being. That way a character who is already on the path to kill the evil overlord can take up the calling when he needs it most with the expectation of having to put it aside for good once roguish play returns.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05494391031541363595noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7219169252198225629.post-69811396343183354262012-03-03T10:50:00.002-08:002012-03-03T10:50:42.595-08:00Agrivaina Session 4 Recap[As told by Balan the Fighter]
